Sampford Peverell Ponds
This fishery consists of two ponds either side of the main Exeter - London railway line, both of which were originally created for the railway in the early 1900’s to supply steam trains with water.
The first pond being adjacent to the access road to Tiverton Parkway Station and is the deeper of the two. The road end of the pond is the shallow area, with depths from approximately 4', gradually deepening towards the bottom corner to approximately 12'.
Fish stocks are. roach, skimmer bream and tench with carp, to 8lbs. It is worth noting; this pond is capable of producing good catches year round; even in mid-winter when other waters have turned off the pond can still produce good nets of fish.
Pole fishing is by far the most popular method, usually over a small amount of loose feed, with maggot, caster and bread punch being the chosen bait. Whilst for the carp angler particle baits are very popular. Unfortunately, due to a few inconsiderate anglers grossly over baiting with boilies, a boily ban has been imposed. However, despite this ban, baits such as sweetcorn and pellet baits have scored extremely well with good fish being reported.
To reach the second of the two ponds you will need to use the small footpath that runs from the station access road up beside the first pond, up to the dual carriageway, turn right across the railway bridge and down the steep embankment the other side. Whilst slightly smaller in size than the first pond it has the advantage of an even 4/5’depth throughout. Fish stock consists of 100's of small carp with the occasional good 7lb fish also being caught. Whilst there are a few tench and rudd; it is however, predominantly a small carp water.
Please note: Due to these severe access difficulties in reaching the back pond, it is not recommended for anglers with physical disabilities.
