River Exe - Weirfield

Brief description of fishery:

A highly productive fishery situated close to the city centre, stocked with roach, dace, Tench with bream to 8lb and carp to 24lb, this is a popular water for match, pleasure and carp anglers alike. Big nets of bream are quite a common occurrence on this water. Whilst it is mainly fished in the summer months, it can however, in the right conditions, produce as many fish during the winter months. There are a large number of resident carp in situ, usually fished for with boily with most fish going from mid doubles to low 20’s. Whilst for pleasure anglers the bream, chub and dace readily take maggot/flake/corn, either presented via a swim feeder or trotting.

Season: 16th June – 14th March.

Access

On the Marsh Barton Trading Estate adjacent to the old city council incinerator/refuse depot (Grace Road), go to the left of it and continue up the narrow lane and over the railway line – a word of caution, you will then come to the Exeter canal directly in front of you! Turn sharp right and immediately on your left drive over the blue canal bridge with a countryside park on the left by the sports field changing room’s car park.  From here you will have to follow the cycle track on foot, until you see the new flood relief channel crossing point on your right, ( nb. at times of high water/flood, carry on and cross at the pedestrian bridge). Turn right and the fishery starts at the end of the allotments, the fishery boundaries are given below. There is another access to the fishery near Devon County Hall on Topsham Road signed Trews Weir. Park on the road at the bottom of the hill and walk across the pedestrian suspension bridge, immediately at the end of the suspension bridge you will come to the flood relief channel, go under the footpath/bridge, walk alongside the allotments fence on your left and the fishery will be found on the left at the end of the allotments.
From the 1st June 2021, Clapperbrook Lane will be closed until further notice to all vehicles. Alternative access has been provided via Water Lane. Use the post code for the SecAnim site, EX2 8DX, if you are unsure of this location. Carry straight on past and follow the diversion signs to the swing bridge, then as normal.
